Celera is currently focusing on those proteins that are on the surface of a tumor or secreted by the tumor. Since this amounts to a very small percentage of the protein that is present in the cell, the processing of the tissues involves enrichment of the cell surface proteins and secreted proteins. For cell surface proteins there are 2 levels of enrichment:
- Enrichment of the tumor cells themselves from the surrounding tissues. We use a process called flow cytometry to separate the tumor cells from the normal cells.
- Separation of the membrane proteins from the rest of the proteins in the cell. The membrane cells only represent 1-2% of the total protein.
