| ADVANTAGES OF PROTEOMICS | ||
Many approaches are currently available for the discovery of therapeutic and diagnostic agents. While current approaches are based on the wealth of information that has become available from the genomics revolution, the majority of drugs today are based on proteins, with 50% of therapeutics on the market targeting cell membrane proteins. A proteomic approach allows us to focus on the therapeutic target itself and should streamline the process of target validation since there is a direct relationship of the protein discovered to the therapeutic or diagnostic agent. Because this direct relationship does not always exist with other approaches, a unique set of proteins are identified that are many steps ahead in the validation process. Celera employs liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, techniques that allow for greater automation and higher throughput and efficiency compared to conventional methods. Biological samples and other related clinical information required for protein analysis are obtained through various collaborations with academic and commercial organizations. Celera has already demonstrated the capability of its proteomics target discovery platform by identifying differentially expressed proteins on the surface of pancreatic cancer cells. These proteins are undergoing further validation to confirm their viability as targets. The proteomics effort is currently focused on pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and breast cancer.
