Celera's effort is focused on cell surface proteins associated with diseases. Cell surface proteins are believed to represent the most promising near-term targets for antibody drugs, in addition to their role as targets for traditional small molecule drugs. Celera also believes that cell surface proteins are the most likely proteins to be shed by a diseased cell, and hence represent likely diagnostic biomarkers.
